Getting over January

Matt

January is over... finally!

As the 3,478th day of the month comes to a close, and Lockdown 3 looking unlikely to come to an end before mid-March it can be hard to have something to look forward to or to focus on to make the time go a little quicker.

I've seen no end of "virtual" running challenges across social media and decided, finally, to join one. I'm already training for an ultra marathon but it can be hard to keep motivating myself to get out the door to train for an event that isn't for another three months and, if I'm being honest with myself, may not even happen at all.

So I (and Rosie) have decided to sign up for one of these challenges to keep us motivated through the month of February. We gave ourselves a deadline of the end of January to get through all the Christmas chocolates and sweets - there's no point starting a new diet on January 1st when there are so many tempting goodies still in the house!

The organisers of the ultra events we're (hopefully) taking part in later in the year are promoting the "London Loops" challenge - 4 loops of London, varying in distance from 60km to 346km, to be walked, jogged or run over the course of February.

And it's pretty reasonable to enter, too. I've seen some challenges that are upwards of £25 pounds to enter but this is £12.95 and you get a medal and souvenir neck buff at the end of it, among other goodies.

As part of my training I'll run 140 miles or so and walk about half that again so I've opted for the third level which is 242km - the London Loop. Promoted by Ken Livingstone and known as the M25 for walkers, it's a signed route with 24 sections along public footpaths through parks, woods and fields around the edge of Greater London. A riverside Erith start. Not that I'll get to see any of that, of course.

Rosie has entered the second tier - the Capital Ring. The 124km route was completed in September 2005 with 15 sections, and passes through the green areas of urban and suburban London – with an ‘official start’ point at the famous Woolwich Foot Tunnel. None of which she will see during the challenge.

Full details of the challenge and how to enter, should you so choose, are here.
